Sectioning Off PowerPoint Presentations

Posted by Russ Ray on August 15, 2008

I know that most of you who present in front of your classes generally are limited to a 10-minute maximum, but if you’re looking at unique and interesting ways to present for up to an hour or more, here are some interesting ideas involving what the author calls section markers.

In this example, you see that there is something at the bottom that looks like a toolbar for four subtopics. The author has bolded the relevant subtopic (images, tables, charts, diagrams) at each point they are being used.

Another idea that might work well for overall topics would be that if you had main topics (such as insurance financing from the example) with a different colored heading. Navy blue could be used for one topic, a green for another, and so on… by doing this, you subtly let the audience know where you are in the conversation without hitting them over the head with it. I’m in the midst of redoing my PowerPoints for a couple of classes I’ll be teaching in a month or so, and I’m thinking of trying this. I’ll let you know the results.
