A Time to Be Quiet

Posted by Russ Ray on September 1, 2008

Hopefully, you’re resting on this Labor Day.

What is “rest” to you? An afternoon nap? A relaxing evening on the porch swing? Sitting on the recliner watching TV alone?

I think with our increasingly overburdened schedules that quiet time steadily gets pushed off to the side. I have this problem. I generally wake up past the time I need to get up, take an hour commute to work, stay there nine hours, drive another hour home, eat dinner, help get the kids ready to bed, and then go to sleep to do the same thing the next day. When you’re on the go so much, who has time for God?

The problem with that attitude is that if we really consider ourselves worshippers of God, then we must put him first in our minds every moment of the day. We have to wake up early for God, make that time to spend with Him in quiet, and cultivate that relationship with Him. When we do that, the rest of the day will take care of itself.

As mentioned here, there are three reasons why we need to be still and know God:

  • When we are trying to hold our world together
  • When it seems that our world is out of control
  • When we need to remember who God is

How many of our problems, worries, and stressors in life could be ameliorated by stopping what we’re doing for a few moments and praying to God? It would make for an outstanding research study.
